In the first episode of “Monster,” people learned of a disturbing trait that Jeffrey had during his pursuit of the murders. After committing the crime, he took Polaroid photos in several gruesome states to document what he did to his victims. He didn’t know it at the time, but these photos would eventually lead to his downfall and make him guilty of murder. Here’s what you need to know about polaroid photos and why Jeffrey felt he needed to capture the process:

How did Jeffrey Dahmer’s Polaroid photos help in his arrest?

According to StyleCaster, Milwaukee police were alerted to Jeffrey’s actions when Tracy Edwards spotted them in handcuffs at 1:30 PM on July 22, 1991. He explained to the police officers that a “freak” had kidnapped him and handcuffed him, causing him to need their help to uncuff him. When their keys failed, Edwards agreed to take the police back to Jeffrey’s apartment.
Upon entering the premises, one of the officers noticed a foul odor and boxes of hydrochloric acid scattered on the floor. As they began their search of the apartment, Tracy led them to Jeffrey’s bedroom, claiming that it was where he kept the alleged murder weapon.

When they opened Jeffrey’s bedside table, they found the knife and 84 Polaroid photos of the victims in various states of disruption. Rolf Mueller, the agent who discovered the photos, was so shocked by the discovery that he told his partner, “These are the real ones.” This led to Jeffrey trying unsuccessfully to fight his arrest. Officers handcuffed him at the scene and took him into custody, saying: “For what I did, I should be dead.”

Upon closer inspection, authorities discovered an even more horrifying picture. According to The Sun, in addition to photographic evidence, he had also kept some body parts of his victims as souvenirs, including skulls and hearts.

For what reason did Jeffrey Dahmer take Polaroid photos of his victims?

While the actual photos of Jeffrey’s murders paint a frightening picture, it’s hard to say exactly what made him document the entire killing process. According to Biography.com, one reason he may have done so was to see his victims in different stages of the murder process so that he could later recall each action and relive it.”

ELLE Australia offered another possible reason why Jeffrey kept the photos and body parts. The publication cites the American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology as saying that he often felt lonely and isolated from the rest of society. Therefore, he had memories “to keep him company.”
