The producers of the Netflix series “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” stated that the purpose of the film was to tell the stories of the victims, not to offer Dahmer’s point of view.
However, the 10-episode series devotes little time to anyone other than Dahmer.
This approach has prompted criticism of the series from both the media and the victims’ families.
Rita Isbell, sister of victim Errol Lindsay, told Insider that she was never consulted about the series.
Eric Perry, Errol and Rita’s cousin, posted a series of tweets in response to the show.
“I’m not going to tell anyone what to watch, I know true crime media is very popular (right now), but if you’re really interested in learning about the victims, my family is furious about this show,” Perry wrote.
“It’s traumatic all over again, and for what?” – Perry said. “How many movies/series/documentaries do we need?”
The identities of the 17 boys and men Dahmer killed were often lost in the descriptions of the crimes, combining into a rundown of names, ages and last known encounters.
The Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Sentinel newspapers, part of the USA TODAY network, also reported on the victims in a limited fashion at the time.
Dahmer, who often lured victims to his apartment with the promise of money, chose people who moved from place to place, leaving reporters with scant details of their lives.
Using what we have, as well as Anna E. Schwartz’s book on the case (“Monster: The True Story of Jeffrey Dahmer’s Murders”), here’s what we know about each victim.
Steven Hicks’ father, Richard, described his son as a deeply caring man, telling an anecdote for The Associated Press about a hunting trip during which Steven shot a rabbit and “was as proud as he could be and then cried.”
Hicks had recently graduated from high school in Coventry Township, Ohio. He was hitchhiking to a rock concert in Chippewa Lake Park, Ohio, about 40 miles away, when Dahmer picked him up and drove him to his parents’ house.
Hicks was last seen on June 18, 1978, but his remains were not discovered until 1991, after Dahmer confessed to his murder.
Stephen Tuomi grew up in Ontonagon in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and worked as a cook at a restaurant in Milwaukee.
Classmates remember him as a quiet but artistic man.
“I took an art class with him, and he made a beautiful lead crystal chandelier that I still remember,” said classmate Priscilla Marley Chinovet. “It was just beautiful. I remember he could do almost anything artistic.”
She is the only Milwaukee murder victim for which Dahmer has not been charged because of a lack of evidence; Dahmer does not remember the details, but believes he killed Tuomi at the Ambassador Hotel.
Tuomi’s father, Walter, said Milwaukee police initially told him there was nothing they could do because there was no evidence of foul play. Tuomi was last seen on September 15, 1987.
