An organic chemistry professor at New York University was fired after a group of students signed a petition against him, claiming his course was too difficult.

Dissatisfaction with Professor Maitland Jones Jr. ’84 prompted 82 of 350 organic chemistry students to sign the petition, citing Jones’ teaching methods and course outline as the reason for the low grades.

“We are very concerned about our grades and have found that they are not an accurate reflection of the time and effort put into this story,” the petition said, according to a report in The New York Times.

“We want you to know that a class with such a high dropout rate and low grades does not prioritize student learning and well-being, and this reflects poorly on the institution as a whole as well as the chemistry department.”

Among the accusations against Jones are the reduction of midterm exams from three to two, the lack of extra credit, the difficulty in accessing the Zoom platform for COVID-19 patients, and the fact that Jones would be a professor teaching in a “condescending and undemanding” style.

Jones defended the claims made in the petition, adding that NYU is reducing the number of exams because it schedules the first exam after six classes.

In addition, technology in the classroom where Jones taught did not allow him to write his notes on the board.

He said the problem with his students arose a decade ago, a few years after he left Princeton to teach at New York University in 2007, when he noticed a loss of concentration in his students.

After a period of virtual learning during the pandemic, the problem worsened. “Now we’re seeing single-digit grades and even zeros,” she said.

Jones and two other teachers recorded 52 lessons to help students, and said Jones paid R$26,000 out of his own pocket to publish them. In 2020, about 30 of the 475 students signed a petition saying they needed more help.

“They really struggled,” Jones said. “There wasn’t good Internet coverage at home.”

Zachariah Benslimane, a Harvard doctoral student and Jones’ former teaching assistant, wrote a letter to NYU in Jones’ defense.

“I believe that this petition was written because of dissatisfaction with the results of the exam, not because of a feeling that we were treated unfairly,” he wrote. I have found that many of the students who complain about the constant lecturing are not taking advantage of the resources we provide.

Jones said he fears that other university professors will face the same reaction from faculty members. “I don’t want my job back,” he said. “I just want to make sure it doesn’t happen to anyone else.”
