In the mid-1970s, when Bundy lived in Seattle, many young women in the area began mysteriously disappearing. In Oregon, women also began disappearing in alarming numbers.

In February 1974, Bundy abducted Linda Ann Healy from her bedroom in a basement in King County, Washington. Authorities later found her skull in the Mount Taylor area.

By August of that year, Bundy had moved to Salt Lake City to study law, but not for long when he assaulted 18-year-old Karen Sparks, broke into her apartment, beat her with a metal pole and raped her, leaving her in a coma for nearly two weeks.

Around the same time, Bundy went camping in Idaho, where he strangled and raped an unidentified woman. Two months later, he abducted 16-year-old Nancy Wilcox in Holladay, Utah. Police never found her remains.

Two weeks later, 16-year-old Melissa Smith disappeared after visiting a pizzeria in Salt Lake City. On Oct. 27, 1974, she was found strangled and her body dumped in Summit Park. Other victims included Janice Ann Ott and Denise Marie Naslund.

While in the Northwest, Bundy continued his murder spree, killing Donna Gail Manson, Susan Elaine Rancourt, Roberta Kathleen Parks, Brenda Carol Ball and Georganne Hawkins.

In November 1974, Bundy met 18-year-old Carol DaRonch. Dressed as a police officer, Bundy approached the teenager after she left a Salt Lake City mall.

According to the report, Bundy told the girl there had been a theft in the area and she needed to file a police report. DeRonch agreed and got into Bundy’s yellow Volkswagen, where he later attempted to handcuff her, but ended up attaching both handcuffs to only one of DeRonch’s hands.

DeRonch escaped and filed charges against Bundy.

In August 1975, authorities stopped Bundy near a Salt Lake City suburb and removed masks, handcuffs, and other incriminating items from his car.

Investigators later seized the car Bundy had previously sold and found the hair of three female victims inside. After he was identified in a police lineup, one of the surviving victims identified Bundy as her attacker.

In 1976, Bundy was sentenced to 15 years in prison for DaRoncha’s kidnapping.

Prior to his incarceration, Bundy kidnapped, raped, and murdered several girls in Utah and Colorado, including 17-year-old Debra Kent, 23-year-old Caryn Campbell, and Denise Oliverson. Just a month after his kidnapping conviction, Colorado authorities charged him with Campbell’s murder.

Bundy managed to escape custody twice. The first time was in 1977, when he snuck out of the law library at the courthouse in Aspen, Colorado. Although he was captured after six days, he managed to escape again just six months after his first attempt, sneaking through the basement of the Glenwood Springs, Colorado, jail.

Once in Tallahassee, Bundy found the entrance to the Chi Omega sorority house at Florida State University through a back door with the lock broken. There, Bundy committed a series of gruesome murders. One of his victims, 21-year-old Margaret Bowman, was beaten with a piece of firewood as she slept in her bed and then strangled with a nylon stocking.

The three victims Bundy attacked that night, Cheryl Thomas, Karen Chandler and Katie Kleiner, survived.

On February 1, 1978, Bundy killed his youngest victim, a little girl named Kimberly Leach from Lake City, Florida. According to Desert News, Kimberly’s murder was unexpected for Bundy because his “type” was usually women in their 20s with long, dark hair.

However, Bundy abducted the girl from the schoolyard, raped and murdered her before dumping her in a state park in Suwannee County. Eight weeks later, police discovered Kimberley’s remains in a state of “deep decomposition.”

The medical examiner who performed Kimberly’s autopsy stated that she likely died “during sexual intercourse.” Authorities found her body twisted in an unusual manner, with her left arm folded under her body and her right arm folded over her head.
