In the series, directed by American Horror Story actor Evan Peters, Jeffrey murders 17 people between 1978 and 1991 while hiding from the police. It wasn’t until escape victim Tracy Edwards (played by Sean J. Brown) turned to authorities and claimed Jeffrey drugged and tried to kill her in July 1991 that the true extent of his actions over 13 years was revealed.

In the first episode of Monster, viewers recognized a disturbing trait that Geoffrey displayed in his murders. After the crime, he took Polaroid photos in various gruesome states of mind to record what he had done to his victims.

He was not aware of it at the time, but these photos eventually convicted him. Here’s what you need to know about Polaroid photos and why Geoffrey felt the need to take them:

How Jeffrey Dahmer’s Polaroid photos led to his arrest.

According to StyleCaster, Milwaukee police became aware of Jeffrey’s gruesome crimes when she was pulled over in handcuffs by Tracy Edwards at 11:30 p.m. on July 22, 1991.

She told officers that a “creep” had kidnapped and handcuffed him and that she needed their help to untie him. When his keys failed, Edwards agreed to take the officers back to Jeffrey’s apartment.

Upon entering the premises, one of the officers noticed an unpleasant odor and boxes of hydrochloric acid scattered on the floor. As they began to search Jeffrey’s apartment, Tracy led them to Jeffrey’s bedroom and claimed that he kept the alleged murder weapon there.

When they opened Jeffrey’s nightstand drawer, they found a knife and 84 Polaroid photos showing the victims in various states of dismemberment.

Rolf Mueller, the officer who discovered the photos, was so shocked by the discovery that he told his partner, “They’re real.” This prompted Jeffrey to make an unsuccessful attempt to evade arrest. Officers handcuffed him and took him into custody, whereupon he said, “I should be dead for what I did.”

Upon further investigation, authorities discovered something even more horrific. According to The Sun, he had not only photographic evidence, but also body parts of his victims, including skulls and hearts.

What drove Jeffrey Dahmer to take Polaroid photos of his victims?

It’s hard to say what exactly prompted him to document the entire murder process. According to Biography.com, one of the reasons he was able to do so was to see his victims “at various stages of the murder process so he could later remember each act and relive their experiences.”

ELLE Australia cites another possible reason why Jeffrey kept photos and body parts. The publication cites the American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology, which says he often felt lonely and isolated from the rest of society. So he kept these grisly mementos “to keep him company.”

Combined with this evidence, Jeffrey eventually pleaded guilty to 16 counts of murder and received 16 life sentences for his crimes. He died in prison in 1994.
